INTRODUCTION TO THE ISLAND OF OAHU^
^
In the middle of the Hawaiian archipelago, just 26 miles off the southeast
shore of Oahu, is the small island of Molokai. It is undeveloped for the most
part, and proud of it. There are only three or four lodging choices on the
island and two golf courses. And if you ask any of the 6,000 residents of
Molokai, they're likely to tell you that that's plenty of hotels and golf
courses already-maybe too many!^
^
Molokai is probably best known for the leper colony that was established on
the remote northern peninsula of Kalaupapa in the mid-1800s and for the work
of the Belgian priest Father Joseph de Veuster Damien who spent much of his
life in the Kalaupapa settlement caring for the people who were banished
there.^
^
Today, visitors to the Friendly Isle will find a way of life that moves at a
much slower pace than most of the world. Jets don't scream in and out of the
airport-the five or six flights that do arrive each day are propeller planes.
There are no high-rises or freeways. And people just don't seem to get wound
up about too many things over here. This is one of the island's charms. If
you're planning a visit to Molokai, you've got to relax!^
^
But don't fall asleep, because there are plenty of activities. One thing
you'll want to consider is renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle. After you've
played the two golf courses the island has to offer, you'll want to do some
exploring, and to a great extent this must be done off-road. All over the
island, there are miles of dirt roads leading to deserted beaches or inland
roads winding through the Molokai outback. The island is teeming with deer,
wild turkey, pheasant and other creatures to enjoy.^
^
Considering the lifestyle of Molokai, it is really a bit surprising to find
two highly enjoyable golf courses there, both in great shape and waiting for
you to arrive.
